United fans have taken a liking to his attitude on and off the pitch and a positive display in pre-season could persuade Mourinho to offer him the armband should the ageing Carrick need a rest.
With the ball at his feet, everyone knows what he can do – but Mourinho will be interested to see what else he can do on the field.
